Application processing timeframes
We follow certain timeframes when processing applications related to motor vehicle trading registrations.
Applications to register as a motor vehicle trader
Whenever we receive an application to register as a motor vehicle trader, we will review and process this within 20 working days. This timeframe starts once you have submitted a complete application and paid any fees.
If we find problems with your application details or statutory declarations, we will let you know as soon as possible and give you time to resolve them. We will not resume our review unless you have clarified these details or resubmitted your application.
From 21 October 2024, we only accept online applications for registration.
If you haven’t received a response from us on your application within 20 working days, please get in touch with us.
Renewal applications
We start sending you reminders to renew your Motor Vehicle Trader registration 20 working days before its expiry date. We recommend that you submit your renewal application at least 5 working days before it expires.
We process applications to renew a Motor Vehicle Trader registration within 20 working days. This timeframe may be shorter if there are no changes to company role holders or personal details.
If we find problems with your registration details or statutory declarations, we will let you know as soon as possible and give you time to resolve them. We will not resume our review unless you have clarified these details or resubmitted your renewal application.

Maintenance requests
If your company experiences any changes, you must update the details of your Motor Vehicle Trader registration as soon as possible.
- If any role holders have left your company, you must notify us within 10 working days of their departure.
- If any new role holders have started at your company, you must notify us within 30 working days of their start date.
- If your business has been sold to a new owner, the new owner must notify us of this change within 30 working days of your transfer.
We process requested changes to Motor Vehicle Trader registration details within 20 working days.
Surrender of registration
If your company stops trading in motor vehicles, you must surrender your Motor Vehicle Traders registration within 20 working days.
Once you have submitted an application to surrender a Motor Vehicle Trader registration, this will take effect immediately.
