Vehicle safety ratings updated on Rightcar

Look out for updated used vehicle safety ratings on Rightcar.govt.nz - including a crash avoidance features rating added this year to help Kiwis find safer vehicles.

Safety ratings provide the best indication of how well vehicles protect people on our roads. The updated (2024) used car safety ratings apply to most cars, SUVs, utes and other light vehicles in New Zealand. They are based on the latest independent analysis of real-world crash data from New Zealand and Australia.

This year the overall safety rating of around 1 million used vehicles has changed, compared to 2023. This includes some newer vehicles which have transitioned from an ANCAP rating, which applies for up to 6 years.

Visit Rightcar to check the latest safety and environmental rating of vehicles you are selling/buying and to find out more about crash avoidance features.

Make sure you’re displaying up-to-date vehicle safety ratings labels. These can be generated online.

The new crash avoidance features rating – which contributes to used vehicles’ overall safety rating – is based on the reduced risk of crashing due to a vehicle having key features which help prevent crashes or reduce their severity.

To help people make more informed choices, Rightcar have also included air pollution ratings in the ‘Great choice!’ criteria. To qualify, new and used vehicles now need high overall safety, carbon emission and air pollution ratings.
